Varing Kwekery’s Business Journey Timeline:

Where it began:
Varing Kwekery, was founded in 1984 by Jan’s parents in their backyard and grew out of the demand of Jan’s horticulture clients who wanted the same exceptional quality potting soil for the plants that they were growing for the retail nursery market. This led to the development of a range of potting soils in 15 and 30 dm bags. It has since grown to become one of the most efficient organic suppliers to the horticultural industry.

Getting an ActionCOACH:
Jan started coaching with ActionCOACH Bert Weenink in 2013, he felt that the business was stagnant and did not have a clear focus on how to drive the growth for the year ahead. They then set a 30% challenging growth target for the business which initially was easily achieved.
The range of planting materials that the business supplied to the market was relaunched in modern colourful packaging . This was made possible by a significant investment in a new FFS packing line with automated palletisation of the filled bags. This equipment is housed in a modern high rise store that was erected for this purpose.
The coaching journey is now almost 10 years young!

Business Milestones:
- Winning the manufacturing / wholesale business of the year at BEF Awards 2016.
- Jan won the ActionMAN award in 2021.
- Jan was elected as Chair person for the SANA Growers Association in 2021.
- This year he was elected as VP for membership for SANA with the task of growing the membership.
- Jan has won numerous awards at ActionCOACH GrowthCLUBs over the years.

Personal Moments:
Within a year of coaching Jan bought a new family car – a Dodge Ram to ensure they could travel safely and with enough space for the family.

Where to next:
The business is currently in a consolidation phase due to the death of one of the shareholders. This has resulted in a reprioritisation of life goals and new staff had to be recruited to ensure the smooth administration of the business. The business has redefined their goals for the next 3 years and is once again looking at renewed growth, improving their cashflow and growing a great team.
